John McCain can't handle Vet question over GI Bill

John McCain can't seem to handle people questioning his accountability on G.I. Bill even if they are Vets.

John McCain gets testy with a vet when questioned on his lack of support for Jim Webb's GI Bill and other bills that he's voted against which would support veterans.

He also attack Jim Webb who actually did the G.I Bill. Said Jim Webb hasn't done enough. Watch the video. So where is the media on this?

Here is John McCain's Record on Veterans.

http://www.democrats.org/a/2007/02/john_ mccain_vot.php

Why then, did McCain vote last year against providing more money for military and veterans hospitals? In February 2006, McCain voted against a Senate amendment that would have provided for at least $19 billion for these facilities, paid for by eliminating tax cuts for the wealthiest earners. Why did Jim Webb have to urge John McCain yet he refused the G.I. Bill?

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/webb -urges-mccain-to-sign-onto-gi-bill-2008- 03-19.html

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) is calling on presumptive GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) to sign on as a co-sponsor to his GI bill, which would improve educational benefits to veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"McCain needs to get on the bill," Webb told reporters after a Christian Science Monitor breakfast meeting on Wednesday. He said legislation mirroring the post-World War II GI bill should not be considered a "political issue."

Will the Media cover any of this?

Before The War:

McCain used many of the same arguments as Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Cheney and President Bush when advocating going to war with Iraq.

So there you have it.

Update http://thinkprogress.org/2008/05/23/mccain-vet-awards/

McCain: ‘I Received The Highest Award From Literally Every Veterans Organization In America’»

The recognition McCain has received from veterans groups is not “high awards” but failing grades:

— Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

– Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain’s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans’ issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

– In a list of “Key Votes,” Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain “Voted Against Us” 15 times and “Voted For Us” only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

Does he start out by saying "bring in the camera"? He thought he was going to get some ad footage.

"I've won every award from every veterans' group"

What an asshole.

Not only that he tried to (2.00 / 4)

explain to the vet how townhalls work. I'm sure the vet has been in enough briefings to know how things work. The award stuff is just to sad considering most veterans are upset with McCain.

"I've won every award..." (2.00 / 2)

He said that what, five times or more in the two clips?  Talk about a one-trick pony.

Yes.  You're a vet, we get it.  Lots of vets in the county, and as much as us civvies appreciate what they did, that in itself does not qualify them for Presidency.  Ya' got anything else to tell us?

So nice to hear your comments again Chris.
Really enjoyed the diary. Rec. McCain seems to believe he will never be criticized. This is what happens after surrounding himself with "yes men" all these years.

The media wont cover (2.00 / 2)

any of it.

Especially if it makes McCain look bad.

They need another horse race... smash Obama enough to make McCain competitive.

You cant do that if McCain's faults are exposed which will further drop his numbers.

He did a great job--the vet, that is. (2.00 / 2)

The best way to go up against a Republican "leader" is to be able to reference specific documents/bills that completely undermine them, and to frame your question (and your inevitable rebuttal of their response) in such a way that it doesn't come off as rude or hostile.  Oh, and stay calm and be patient--let the Republican lose his cool all he/she wants, but keep yours, no matter how insulting or intimidating they may try to be.  If you do that, it is practically guaranteed that the Republican will come off looking like shit...whereas if you make a nuisance of yourself, the Republican comes off looking sympathetic.

It's a shame that McCain managed to keep his temper, though, even if he only barely kept control of it.  If he had actually blown up at the vet, this election would be O-V-E-R.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were no rhetorical questions?

Re: He did a great job--the vet, that is. (2.00 / 3)

Yup.  That's why I'm looking forward to the debates... because Obama, though he occasionally tends to babble or stutter-stop, has remained cool even in some of the worst debate environments (like the 45-minute ambush at the ABC debate) against perhaps the best debater in the business.

McCain, on the other hand, was pretty piss-poor against this year's Republican field, which contained such dreaded debaters as R0n P4u1, Rudy Giuliani, and Fred Thompson.

I have no doubt that Obama's going to try to needle McCain with seemingly-innocuous statements and try to get him to blow up.  I have no doubt that Obama can run policy circles around McCain.  And I have no doubt that Obama's going to come off smoother, more articulate, more graceful, and damn it, more Presidential than the old man.

Hopfully straight out of the movies.... (2.00 / 2)

My waking fantasy is, in the middle of debate #2, something either the moderator or Obama says sends McCain into a spitting slurring tirade.

I'm thinking just this side of Col. Nathan Jessup in "a few good men"...

"You want the truth, Tom Brokaw! You can't handle the truth!!!!!"

What I noticed was how lukewarm the audience was... not everyone clapped for McCain's answer.  How un-Republican. McCain's "strength" may well turn into his weakness.

What a bald-faced liar he is. Does he not (none / 0)

know there are inventions that can record his own words and actions? Obama's team needs to do an ad that is a compilation of McCain's incessant flip-flopping, including how the MSM is intentionally not covering it. Exposing the MSM for it's coddling of McCain as an attempt to produce a "higher-ratings-horserace" is imperative.

At last! Thanks! (none / 0)

I've been saying for MONTHS that we can't hit McCain on his service, but we CAN hit him on his voting record where it regards active military and vets issues! That record is very sucky, whereas in Obama's short Senate history his record is pretty stellar!

Some great campaign ads could be made, just 15 or 30-second ads asking such things as "Why did John McCain vote against the GI Bill?", etc.

I believe that if our armed services members-- active and veterans-- and their families knew about McCain's dismal voting record, support for him would drop like a rock.

by Swedie on Tue Jul 08, 2008 at 07:56:57 PM EST

Don't you question his military service! (none / 0)

Ummm did you forget? You're not allowed to question John McCain on anything to do with his military service or you're a freedom-hater. Wes Clark, John Kerry, and Max Cleland, however, are fair game.
