After the deadliest month in the war in Afghanistan so far, President Bush announced plans to increase the number of troops deployed to Afghanistan. 28 U.S. troops died in Afghanistan in June, outnumbering the June count in Iraq, which has triple the number of forces there. (armytimes.com)

However, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says that he won't have those troops unless he pulls them out of Iraq. (salon.com)

In Buffalo, NY, a judge has created the first veterans treatment court. Meting out criminal justice with an emphasis on treating the mental wounds of returning combat veterans, Judge Robert Russell started the treatment court upon realizing that a more nuancedjustice system that recognizes the stumbling blocks combat veterans sometimes face might be the most effective way to deal with returning servicemembers who commit nonviolent offenses. Thank you for the update, I apologize that this diary hasn't received more recognition on this site.  I hope the necessary troops are provided for in Afghanistan.

Thanks for the updates, Jason. I agree with KLR, it's a shame these diaries don't get more attention, considering how important these issues are to Democrats.
